Noble Steed(s)!
When I started riding again (about a year ago - well it was a year ago when I wrote this) I rode my mountain bike - 1999 Iron Horse ARS 8.0 - which is prefectly functional (see bottom of page).
After about 6 months riding it to work I decided to get a road bike, better still I decided to build it myself (something I’d intended to do at some point in my life).
Most people probably won’t care much about what the bike is, but I’m going to give a run down on what I built anyway:
- Frame - Ridley Compact 57cm
- Fork - Reynolds Ouzo Comp, full carbon
- Wheels - Maddux Aero Racing F20
- Crank - Truvativ Rouleur Team 2.2 (53-39)
- Headset - Cane Creek IS6
- Derailleurs - Campagnolo Centaur for 10spd
- Shifters - Campagnolo Veloce Infinite QS
- Stem -
Cinelli Groove 140mm (cos it looks cool)Reynolds Ouzo Comp 120mm O/S - Bars -
Syntace Stratos 400 (TT Base Bars)Zues Cat-1 Drop Bars - Brakes - Cannondale Delta dual pivot
- Cassette - Miche 10 spd (11-25)
Saddle - Sette LynxISM Adamo Road- Seatpost - Sette APX
- Tires -
IRC RedstormHutcheson Fusion - Chain - Wippermann 10 spd
- Pedals - Crank Brothers Candy C
- Jtek Shiftmate to make the Campy parts work with the Shimano cassette.
There you have it…cost me a bunch less than you would pay for a similar quality bike off the shelf, gave me the satisfaction of building it myself and ended up being a winner all round.
As a note - it weighs 18lbs w/o pedals (for $100 more at the time I built it I could’ve shaved almost a pound more off - hindsight it great).
This is how the old and new saddles look together.
The second steed, perhaps the Clydesdale, is the Iron Horse mountain bike, aka the Tractor.
When the weather gets really rough this will be the ride of choice (unless I buy some cross tires for the road bike…).
It was actually a concious effort to make the colors on the bike clash! I changed out the bars for anodized blue ones and added the anodized red (now pink) bar ends.
Oddly enough I’ve had this bike up to 62mph offroad going down Box Hill in Surrey, UK. The road bike has only been up to 52mph!
Sweeeeeet!
I love it!
Beautiful bike. Can I point out though that it’s in the bedroom. You can luuurve your bike too much, y’know!
Heheheh, thanks guys!
My wife pointed out that it was in the bedroom too…she even offered to sleep on the couch if I wanted some private time!
To show missussinclair how that sort of talk can end up, do a search for the “love your bike” video on youtube . . . It was made for a campaign to get more people cycling in England (specifically Manchester?). Enjoy!
Yikes…I’ve only been through Manchester a couple of times, but had no idea this kind of thing was going on behind closed doors!!
