Routes/Commutes

It’s interesting to look back at the speeds I used to ride my commutes at.  Below the line on this page you can see some of the speeds I averaged back then…16.98mph was the fastest I did one of the longer routes.  It’d be interesting to go back to Whidbey Island and ride the same route again…I think I’d be a lot faster!

Since I’m not planning to be back there any time soon I’ll need to work on a new commute to time.  I did that commute for the first time today (4th November 2009) and it covered 12.9 miles round trip, 6.5 out, 6.4 back.

To Work:

6.5 miles: (Single Speed)
21:03 @ 18.5mph (48×18)
19:37 @ 19.6mph (48×17)

From Work:

6.4 miles:  (Single Speed)
19:36 @ 19.6mph (48×18)
18:12 @ 21.1mph (48×18)

Even though I live a whole 1.6 miles from work I like to call it a commute…sounds more impressive than the truth!

There are 2 routes I use to get to work, and 4 going home.  Below are the route distances and my speed records on them.

To Work:

  1. 1.6 miles - 3:53 @ 24.7mph (max about 40mph)
    3:52 @ 24.8mph (max 36mph) set 10/25/07
  2. 1.8 miles - 4:45 @ 22.7mph (max 52mph - steep hill)

From Work:

  1. 1.6 miles - 6:53 @ 13.9mph (max 23mph)
  2. 1.8 miles - 8:10 @ 13.2mph (max 23mph)
  3. 7.5 miles - 27:30 @ 16.4mph (max 42mph)
  4. 9.6 miles - 34:53 @ 16.5mph (max 42mph) - set 10/9/07
    34:07 @ 16.9mph (max 42mph) set 10/22/07
    33:55 @ 16.98mph (max 42mph) set 10/31/07

This is where my ”More Speed” title comes from.  The quest to go faster on the routes I ride.  If I’m not pushing myself I feel I’m letting myself down.

9.6 Mile Profile The 9.6 mile profile (cuts a little bit because of my start and finish points not being exactly the same).
